House goals: Not your average London shed

This beautiful home is definitely not what comes to mind when you hear the word ‘shed’. Nevertheless it used to be one before De Rosee Sa got to work on it.

The home is bright due to three cedar-lined courtyards which surround it. It is sandwiched between garages and rear terrace gardens in West London’s Notting Hill. The original shed was unused and is located on the site of a former timber storage yard and has now become a family home.

Due to the local planning restrictions, the architecture studio had to work around a lot of planning rules, which was definitely a challenge. Buildings in the area are not allowed to exceed a certain height and all new structures must match the outline of the existing single-story sheds in the surrounding area.

The new floor plan now has 1200 feet of living space, with the living room, kitchen and bedroom with en-suite bathroom on the ground floor. Due to the building restrictions, the conversion plan includes a new basement level which has a second bedroom with another en-suite bathroom and its own external courtyard.

The architects could not add windows into the boundary walls due to privacy concerns, so they had to work around this to brighten up the home. The solution? Three external courtyards which connect to the interior with steel-and-glass doors. This provides every room in the house with natural light and makes for a bright and airy home and encourage the family to go outdoors in the warmer months.

The interiors are kept white with vertical wood panelling which contrast with the industrial-looking steel doors. The home features strong architectural lines paired with interesting textures and materials, resulting in a high-end feel.
